More about Brief Therapy

Brief therapy offers a whole different way of looking at people and how they function.

My main underpinning assumptions are that

  • You know how to be well,
  • You can change profoundly and
  • This change can be achieved rapidly.
  • Your behaviour always makes sense when we include the context

I reject the idea that people are 'crazy', 'dysfunctional' or 'deficient' and this if for me of fundamental importance.

It is not necessary for us to explore the many possible causes of problems to help you change. With a pragamatic focus we can explore the consequences of the problem, what has worked for you so far, and how your progress can be improved upon.

Brief therapy is becoming better known in the UK but there is still a long way to go. The solution focussed approach is used in the NHS and some Primary Care Trusts are training their counsellors in brief therapy. For example I have given training in Brief Therapy to counsellors working for Ealing Primary Care Trust.

Research has shown that 65% to 83% of individuals attending solution focused brief therapy made lasting changes in less than five sessions. Following up into how well people maintained their progress also showed a high rate of success. (See the link on Solution Focused Brief therapy.)
